Walking Tour with Ruth Reichl, Lower East Side
The Lower East Side is one of the oldest neighborhoods in New York City and was once a center of Jewish culture. Only a few examples of this remain. Join Ruth Reichl for a tour of the neighborhood in which she once lived and visit some of her favorite establishments that have lasted for decades. The tour begins with knishes from Yonnah Schimmel's, and then continues onto to Russ and Daughters, a specialty food shop in business since 1914. Browse the shelves containing dried fruits, nuts, chocolates, and cheeses. Then, a quick stop at Katz's Delicatessen, the oldest deli in New York (est. 1888), will take you back in time. Here, taste hand-carved pastrami and corned beef and kibbutz with the countermen. The tour ends at the Essex Street Market where Ruth will take you to some of her favorite stalls.
