The new HBO series,
Boardwalk Empire, from writer/
creator Terence Winter and
director Martin Scorsese, is
this fall's must-see television
event. Series premieres Sunday,
September 19 at 9pm on HBO .
Meet the fall season's cold and wet weather head on with these sturdy
work boots—they're structured and rugged, a welcome change from
your office dress shoe routine.
Wear them with jeans and a shawl collar sweater on the weekends,
or with cords and a tweed sports jacket almost anytime. Heading out?
Throw on a red plaid scarf to continue the outdoorsman look.
The boots' thick leather and chunky sole make them incredibly
durable, and they match up well with a variety of cold weather fabrics,
from tweed and corduroy to flannels and heavier wools. There is a
confidence to these boots that you'll feel right away, even if you're
pounding the city pavement and not trekking the deep woods.

Brett,
I am a 44-year-old man who
always tries to look his best. At
my age, what brands should I
be purchasing to avoid looking
like a kid? What stores might be
best for me to try in order to find
these brands/designers?
- Greg
Hi Greg,
As you build and expand your
wardrobe, think about it in terms of
finding great individual items, and
then in terms of how you put those
items together, instead of searching
for particular brands. A store like
H&M, for instance, which trends
younger, can be a great place
to pick up a lightweight V-neck
sweater, no matter your age.
SOME BASIC TIPS: Avoid tee
shirts and polos that have oversized
logos or busy designs. Instead,
wear timeless white and gray crew
or V-neck tee shirts. The same goes
for your jeans. A brand like Earnest
Sewn keeps it clean and simple and
avoids over-the-top patterns on the
back pockets. Your choice of shoes
is very important, too. For sneakers,
I would suggest Converse Jack
Purcells, because they can be worn
with just about anything and are laid
back, not sporty or trendy. For dress
shoes, simple black lace-ups with
a slightly rounded toe will do the
trick. Finally, make sure you have a
variety of fitted sports jackets that
can be worn with jeans, a dress
shirt, and a medium width tie, for
the office or a night out.
Your goal should be to find a look
that has an understated elegance,
works for your personal style, and
isn't forced. Be yourself.
If you want to find a great selection
of classic and modern brands, visit
Saks Fifth Avenue. In particular, I
like Theory, a label that works for
just about any age. If you need more
help, come see me in New York.
Good luck!
Brett
